The Department collects information for those aged 18 to 24 and the latest information available at May 2015 shows that for this age group there were 121,950 lone parents receiving Income Support and 3,500 people, without an additional payment for a partner and with at least one dependent child, receiving Jobseeker’s Allowance (JSA).
Please note that the figures are rounded to the nearest ten.
The information requested for those who are care leavers is not readily available and could only be provided at disproportionate cost.

In discussing and agreeing the content of a JSA Claimant Commitment, Jobcentre Plus work coaches will make lone parents aware of the flexible arrangements available to them to enable them to search for work and meet their caring responsibilities.

Local Jobcentre Plus managers are responsible for making sure work coaches provide claimants with the support they need and for ensuring the flexibilities for those with caring responsibilities are deployed appropriately. This process is underpinned by work coach learning and development, procedural guidance and a Quality Assurance Framework that is used to help managers observe and provide feedback on interviews with claimants.

The information requested on the proportion of JSA sanctions overturned is not currently available.
DWP statisticians identified an error in the JSA sanctions appeal outcomes data. In line with normal practice for official statistics the Department has withdrawn this particular set of information. The data will be made available again as soon as possible pending investigations by DWP statisticians who will, if necessary, make corrections to this data.

I think we all believe that it is important that where lone parents can work, they should work, because that helps to boost their income and that of their family. We are committed to ensuring all lone parents have the support they need to find work quickly.
At the outset of the claim to JSA, everyone sees a personal adviser to discuss and agree a jobsearch plan and the support needed from their personal adviser. Since April 2011, personal adviser support beyond the new claims stage is delivered through flexible interventions tailored to individual need and delivered by the same person wherever possible. As part of this and over and above the flexible interventions agreed at the outset of the claim, claimants can ask to see their personal adviser at any time.
All personal advisers are equipped with the skills and knowledge to support the diverse needs of individual claimants, including lone parents with caring responsibilities.
In addition to the agreed flexible interventions provided by a personal adviser, claimants are usually required to attend fortnightly jobsearch reviews undertaken by assistant advisers. These relatively short contacts provide regular opportunities to monitor progress and to provide feedback to personal advisers, particularly where additional help is needed. As the report acknowledges, claimants do not always see the same person each time they attend a jobsearch review, but they do see someone from the same team who has undergone the same training route way. Where additional help is required, the claimant is referred to their personal adviser.
In view of the above, I have no plans to reinstate bespoke lone-parent advisers.
