The question has been interpreted to refer to the required number (““establishment””) and the actual number (““strength””) of personnel in the Infantry battalions. The figures provided are peacetime establishment numbers but it should be noted that a battalion deploying on operations will be augmented by further Infantry and specialist personnel, as required, to ensure that it has the strength required for its operational role. Such adjustments are not included in the table because of their temporary nature.The strength figures given are for Infantry-trained officers and soldiers serving at regimental duty. They do not include Infantry-trained personnel in other posts—for instance, those serving in higher headquarters, in Ministry of Defence Centre, in Defence Equipment and Support, or in other non-Regimental posts. The strength numbers will fluctuate up and down on a daily basis as, for example, personnel move from training into the battalions or as personnel complete their service and leave.The figures shown in the following tables contain similar variations to previous answers provided on this subject, and do not display any new or unexpected trends; the figures requested for the Infantry battalions are correct as of 1 October 2010:

Minimum staffing levels are set by governors. No central guidance has been issued to governors on a minimum ratio of prisoners to prison officers across the prison as a whole. The Specification, Benchmarking and Costing programme is producing non-mandatory operating models for services operated in prisons, which can include potential staffing models. Governors may use these operating models to inform their decisions about staffing. The programme publishes a full list of the prison and probation services to be covered by the programme, which has been placed in the Library of the House.

The number of consultant midwives in each region of England is not identified separately.However, numbers are available for nurse consultants in maternity services. Consultant midwives are included in the nurse consultants staff group but we cannot identify the precise numbers of consultant midwives within this staff group.

| As from 21 July 2010 The Information Centre has published experimental, provisional monthly NHS work force data. As expected with provisional, experimental statistics, some figures may be revised from month to month as issues are uncovered and resolved. The monthly work force data is not directly comparable with the annual work force census; it only includes those staff on the Electronic Staff Record (ESR) (i.e. it does not include Bank staff). There are also new methods of presenting data (headcount methodology is different and there is now a role count). | The NHS Information Centre for health and social care seeks to minimise inaccuracies and the effect of missing and invalid data but responsibility for data accuracy lies with the organisations providing the data. Methods are continually being updated to improve data quality where changes impact on figures already published. This is assessed but unless it is significant at national level figures are not changed. Impact at detailed or local level is footnoted in relevant analyses. | ||

The National Treatment Agency for Substance Misuse (NTA) Annual Accounts from 2001-02 to 2008-09 record the number of staff employed by the NTA as:
The activities of the NTA have increased significantly since its inception in 2001-02.The NTA's role and responsibilities now include the Integrated Drug Treatment System (IDTS), Drug Intervention Programme (DIP), National Drug Treatment Monitoring System (NDTMS), National Alcohol Treatment Monitoring System (NATMS), and it has increased its capacity to support local delivery, including providing guidance and support to Drug Action Teams, ensuring they are able to provide drug misusers with a full range of services, as well as monitoring performance.
