Proceeding contribution from Peter Bone (Conservative) in the House of Commons on Friday, 9 September 2011. It occurred during Debate on bill on House of Commons Disqualification (Amendment) Bill.

House of Commons Disqualification (Amendment) Bill

My hon. Friend is absolutely right, and as usual he is at one with the Prime Minister in wanting deregulation. Let me finish by quoting the words of a man who has the best interests of our democracy and our country at heart. This man said:"““We will give the House of Commons more control over its own timetable so there is proper time for scrutiny and debate. We will make MPs more independent, with more free votes so that they can vote as they wish and not as they're told to.””" Those are words of our new Prime Minister, uttered in 2009 in his powerful speech about rebuilding the connection between Parliament and the people. He has already done much by giving us the Backbench Business Committee, ensuring the election of Select Committee Chairmen and promising to set up a business of the House committee by 2013. I am moving the Second Reading of this Bill today to help the Prime Minister achieve his aims.
