Northern Ireland (Miscellaneous Provisions) Bill

I have two or three points to make about my amendments. I accept that the Government have made a step forward. Whether it is a big step, I do not know, but it is certainly not big enough for us. I am concerned about consistency with the Irish Government. I would be much happier if there was an agreement that the Irish Government would remain consistent with us, because for us to temper our laws on elections in Ireland to be consistent with the Irish Government does not make much sense to me. It should very definitely be the other way around, and we should look for an undertaking from the Irish Government to that effect. I believe that they would like to follow us, but they do not have the guts to do it—or maybe they cannot win the vote in the Dáil if they wish to. We shall certainly return to the matter on Report.
