Question: To ask the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry, what estimate he has made of the emission savings that could be achieved (a) by an additional 5 per cent. tax on domestic energy consumption and (b) by the introduction of the climate change levy; and if he will make a statement. - Inc figures.

Answer: Dr. Kumar: To ask the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry what estimate he has made of the emission savings that could be achieved (a) by an additional 5 per cent. tax on domestic energy consumption and (b) by the introduction of the climate change levy; and if he will make a statement. [88318] Mr. Battle: For social policy reasons, the Government have no intention of introducing new taxes on domestic consumption of fuel and power. The climate change levy will encourage energy efficiency in business and is expected to save around 1.5 million tonnes of carbon a year by 2010.
