MHCLG is the lead department for wildfire. Defra works closely with them on wildfire preparedness and incident response. In England and Wales, the Met Office’s Fire Severity Index is used to evaluate how severe a wildfire could become if one were to ignite under current weather patterns. Defra is undertaking a range of research projects to review new and existing evidence on wildfire and best practice approaches to building environmental resilience and manage this natural hazard.
To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer, what steps he is taking to help reduce fuel costs for working families, including consideration of a targeted reduction on fuel duty in Northern Ireland.

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport, what Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) capability is currently available at RAF Northolt; whether SAF is available to business aviation operators using the airfield; how its availability compares with Farnborough, London Luton, London Stansted and Biggin Hill airports; and what plans she has...

This Government is committed to protecting peatlands. In September 2025, the Heather and Grass etc Burning (England) Regulations 2021 were amended, expanding restrictions on unnecessary burning practices, to enhance protection of upland deep peat and improve the resilience of moorlands. A range of new scientific evidence, subject to appropriate academic rigour, was assessed within the context of the cumulative evidence base. Evidence showed that burning, especially repeated burning, results in a departure from the typical structure of these habitats and can impact how they function. The Government remains satisfied that the Regulations are supported by the available evidence.
Defra continues to monitor the growing evidence on this topic. As part of its delivery of the Third National Adaptation Programme, Defra has commissioned a wildfire and peatland study, which includes looking at the effectiveness of a range of peatland land management systems and practices in creating wildfire resilience. Defra will continue to monitor these results and engage with key stakeholders.
To ask the Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero, what steps her Department is taking to help prevent profiteering on the sale of road fuel and off-grid fuel prices.
To ask the Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero, what steps her Department is taking to help prevent profiteering on the sale of road fuel and off-grid fuel prices.
The Government will not tolerate profiteering or unfair practices in fuel markets.
For road fuel, we are supporting greater competition and transparency through Fuel Finder, which requires retailers to share live prices. The Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) also continues to monitor retailer behaviour, including passive pricing strategies that may contribute to sustained high margins.
For heating oil, the CMA has proposed stronger consumer protections, including supplier registration and minimum standards, improved price transparency, independent dispute resolution and better support for vulnerable households. It has also secured compensation for customers affected by cancelled orders. The Government welcomes this work, is carefully considering the CMA’s recommendations and intends to respond formally in due course.
Vulnerable households facing immediate financial difficulties because of rising heating oil prices are encouraged to contact their local authority to find out what support may be available to them through the Crisis and Resilience Fund (CRF) which has over £50million to help low-income families tackle surging prices.
That this House notes with concern the persistently high and variable road fuel prices faced by drivers across the United Kingdom; further notes the Competition and Markets Authority findings that prices remain significantly above levels seen before the conflict in the Middle East, alongside passive pricing strategies by some retailers that have failed to promptly pass on reductions in wholesale prices to motorists; recognises that rural communities are particularly exposed to high fuel costs, where limited public transport alternatives and greater distances to travel leave households with little choice but to pay elevated prices at the pump; stresses that rural households continue to face wider and unrelenting cost-of-living pressures, including a 4% increase in the Ofgem energy price cap from October and rocketing fertiliser and red diesel prices for farmers after a summer of extreme weather; believes that additional targeted support must be provided to vulnerable consumers while fuel retailers continue to benefit from historically high margins; calls on the Government to introduce immediate relief by cutting fuel duty by 10p per litre and to strengthen enforcement to ensure that reductions in wholesale prices are fully and swiftly passed on to motorists; and urges the Government to expand the Rural Fuel Duty Relief Scheme to additional rural communities facing disproportionately high fuel costs.

My right hon. Friend rightly points out the tax increases that airports are facing combined with business rates and increased regulations. We are trying to build a business case for commercial flights from Blackpool airport again, and such things make it really hard for airports that are trying to reopen...

I thank my hon. Friend for that. Obviously, the air space does not exist within the Bill alone. The tax changes will have huge implications, whether at Blackpool airport or at Humberside airport, which I visited recently. They face life-and-death pressures that will decide whether they continue to be going...

I would like to say that it is a pleasure to follow the shadow Secretary of State for Transport. I think most people here will want to address yesterday’s incident, its implications for passengers and the aviation sector, and more importantly—the reason we are here—the Bill. Most of my remarks,...

Would the hon. Member like to reflect on what happened to me over the summer when I was flying back from a family holiday? Our flight was continually delayed, and we kept getting told that there were “extraordinary circumstances”, which we know is code for, “You won’t get compensation.” That...

The hon. Member describes a holiday experience that so many of our constituents have had. There are two issues here. The first is getting information and updates regularly. Yesterday, one pilot had the decency to say, “Look, I don’t know what’s happening,” every 20 minutes; at least that gave some...

I commend the Government on bringing forward this Bill. My hon. Friend is giving an excellent speech. I have been reflecting on what she has said, and on the Government’s focus on taking away barriers to consumers—our constituents—asserting their rights, especially given the cost of living challenges we face. Does...

My hon. Friend makes a very good point. The delay repay system, which we now take for granted on our rail system, except on the Eurostar, is a good model. I agree that the airlines could look at that, and I hope that the Minister will consider it as well.

On the issue of connectivity to airports, my hon. Friend and I have discussed in the past the fact that there is no rail link to Glasgow International airport. In fact, it is possible to get a train from Glasgow Central station to Manchester airport but not from Glasgow Central...

I think I am right in saying that people also have to walk quite some way to get the bus to the airport. Talk about a lack of joined-up thinking in our public transport—and in this instance I include flying.
I fear that in this respect the UK is an embarrassment....

My hon. Friend is giving an excellent and thorough speech based on her and her Committee’s work. I agree with everything she has said, with one caveat, which is that even for those living a stone’s throw from the airport there often are not public transport links. In my constituency...

Absolutely. For almost 40 years, I have dealt with Heathrow’s lack of interest in transport. My hon. Friend is to the north of Heathrow, and I know full well what he is saying. In fact, one of the section 106 conditions in the terminal 5 planning decision was that there...

My hon. Friend and neighbour mentions the Elizabeth line—we cannot miss that out when talking about connectivity to Heathrow—which has transformed my constituents’ lives.
