No Confidence in Her Majesty's Government

That this House has no confidence in Her Majesty's Government and its ability to negotiate the best deal for Britain at the forthcoming inter-governmental conferences on monetary and political union within the European Community; believes thhat the Prime Minister's method of conducting negotiations, as exemplified at the recent summit in Rome, only serves to reduce the influence that Britain has on the outcome of such meetings; considers that the seemingly irreconcilable divisions within the Cabinet over the issue of a single European currency weaken the Government's ability to negotiate on behalf of this country; notes that the Prime Minister's statement to the House on the Rome Summit on 30th October made clear that a Government under her leadership would never accept a single European currency and thus further prejudices Britain's negotiating position; believes that a single European currency and an independent European Central Bank would be in Britain's best long term economic interests and are fully reconcilable with a proper understanding of how a liberal democracy should operate; and therefore looks forward to a Government which has a positive vision of Britain's role in Europe that will enable it to be taken seriously in negotiations with our Community partners and thus obtain the best deal for Britain.
