Integrated care boards are responsible for providing mental health services to meet the needs of their local populations. As part of our plan for change, we will reduce delays and provide faster treatment. We are working with NHS England to transform mental health services, shift care from hospitals to local communities, and increase access to support for people across the country, including in rural areas.

Unfortunately, the local mental health trust followed that decision by announcing the closure of the Yewdale ward for acute mental health services. Does the Minister agree that we need to get early intervention right before we close acute services, and will he bring together a meeting to scrutinise that decision?

To ask Her Majesty's Government whether they anticipate that Workington and Whitehaven will be eligible to receive support from the Stronger Towns Fund.
To ask Her Majesty's Government whether they anticipate that Workington and Whitehaven will be eligible to receive support from the Stronger Towns Fund.
The Stronger Towns Fund is a new £1.6 billion fund to support towns in England to harness their unique strengths to grow and prosper.
I confirmed to the House on 5 March the Government will publish further detail on the operation of the Fund in due course.

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport, how many applications have been made for the installation of permanent traffic lights on the B5345 (Whitehaven) in the last five years.
Installation of traffic lights is the responsibility of the local traffic authority. They do not have to obtain approval to do so from the Department.
Cumbria County Council sought advice from the Department in January 2016 about placing traffic signals on the B5345 at Meadow View, but this did not constitute an application for approval.
Legislation restricts the use of traffic lights to places where there is conflict, either between vehicles or vehicles and pedestrians. This means junctions, places where the headroom or width of the road is permanently restricted, or crossing places. The Department’s view was that this site did not fall within any of these circumstances and Cumbria County Council was advised accordingly.

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport, what the criteria were for the relocation of Whitehaven Coastguard headquarters to the inland Sneckyeat Industrial Estate.
The primary criteria considered when relocating the Whitehaven Coastguard Rescue Team was Her Majesty’s Coastguard’s ability to maintain effective and appropriate responses to incidents.
Response times from this new base to incidents will meet the current service standard and are comparable with responses times from the existing base; for some locations the response times will be improved.
Additionally the new site provides:
· more space for the additional full-time Coastguard Officers that will be supporting the Coastguard Rescue Teams in the local area;
· appropriate working environment for full-time officers; and
· improved facilities for maintaining rescue equipment.
