Water regulators monitor leakage against company commitments in Water Resources Management Plans. Latest data shows a 12% reduction from 2017/18 by June 2025. The Government is working to ensure that planned reservoir, desalination, and water efficiency deliver their expected contributions to the water supply shortfall by 2055.

Extended Producer Responsibility for packaging makes producers responsible for costs of managing household packaging when it becomes waste. Obligations are therefore determined by turnover and packaging tonnage, rather than an organisation’s business model or use of profits.
Registered charities are exempt from disposal fees. The Government has no plans to extend this exemption to social enterprises. Businesses with turnover below £2 million and placing less than 50 tonnes of packaging on the market are exempt from disposal fee and recycling obligations.
Defra continues to engage with social enterprises, and their feedback informs its review of the impacts of the scheme.

Defra is aware of Australia's shred-only policy for exports of waste tyres, and officials have met with stakeholders, including from Australia, to better understand the rationale for the policy, its implementation, and the impacts reported to date.
The Department continues to monitor international approaches to waste tyre management and considers a range of evidence when assessing options for improving the environmental outcomes associated with end-of-life tyres and strengthening the circular economy.

The August 2026 update to the National Planning Policy Framework, in Policy F8, requires developments with drainage implications to use Sustainable Drainage Systems. Attenuation of flood risk is a key element of delivering sustainable development.
Herefordshire Council's Core Strategy, adopted in 2015, includes policies that address Sustainable Design (SD1) – including water conservation, and Sustainable Water Management and Water Resources (SD4). A new Local Plan is being prepared.
Rainwater harvesting and other water storage infrastructure play an essential part in both conserving water during dry weather and restricting its impact during flooding. This provides a long-term cumulative benefit.

Defra is finalising the drafting of the legislation to withdraw the T8 waste exemption for end-of-life tyres, and it will be laid in parliament when parliamentary time allows.

The Environment Agency's (EA) enhanced verification checks, which required evidence to demonstrate that waste had been correctly received overseas, examined more than 10,000 waste tyre shipments between October 2025 and July 2026 and found no evidence of widespread diversion to illegal pyrolysis. The EA has therefore moved to a risk-based approach, focusing scrutiny on operators of concern while maintaining regulatory oversight. The EA has not identified adverse impacts of this approach on compliant UK recyclers.
Future phases of Digital Waste Tracking are planned to strengthen information reporting requirements for exports of Article 18 wastes, including waste tyres.
