The Berlin Embassy is the only Private Finance Initiative (PFI) facility the FCDO has, and this facility has been operating since 2000. The contract term is 30 years, and this is due to end in June 2030. Throughout the operational life of the contract the Foreign Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) has ensured that all contract terms and conditions, including service benchmarking when appropriate, have been discharged and that the embassy is maintained and serviced in accordance with the contract terms and conditions. The FCDO has entered into the project hand back period and has mobilised a team to determine what will be the best value for money and operational model for the embassy and the FCDO post June 2030.

Since the signing of the landmark Trinity House Agreement, the UK and Germany have delivered tangible progress across its five Lighthouse Projects. This includes the creation of a fifth Lighthouse Project on Cyber at the Agreement's first anniversary in October 2025, and the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) Framework Agreement for Deep Precision Strike in March 2026.

This Government is committed to strengthening the UK’s bilateral relationships across the world and promoting the UK’s economic and financial objectives.

HM Treasury regularly engages with key partners on priority economic issues through multilateral fora, as well as bilaterally. The Chancellor and Chief Secretary attended the G20 Finance Track meetings last week in the US. The UK will bring together the world’s major economies when it hosts the G20 Presidency in 2027 and G7 Presidency in 2028.

Multilateral collaboration is key to achieving the UK’s objectives in the long-term as it allows like-minded partners to discuss the most pressing issues facing the global economy today.

The Chancellor will continue to engage with the UK’s key partners through bilateral and multilateral meetings to promote trade and investment; to address shared economic and financial priorities; and to support growth.

The UK and Germany signed a Memorandum of Understanding in March 2026 which has enabled joint activities, including with industry, to align military requirements and invest in technical solutions under the Deep Precision Strike programme. The programme includes Stealthy Cruise and Hypersonic Glide Vehicle missile solutions. There is positive alignment between the UK and Germany on key programme parameters, including operational concepts and outline target in service dates into the 2030s. Joint UK and Germany teams are now focused on delivering the currently contracted technical work with industry as well as shaping follow on contracts, underpinned in the UK by the funding outlined under the Defence Investment Plan.

The Department for Transport has not made assessments of the effectiveness of average speed camera systems in reducing collisions in France, Germany or the Netherlands, and has not made recent assessments specifically of the impact of average speed camera installations on casualty numbers, speeding violations or fatal road traffic collisions in urban areas.

The deployment and operation of speed camera systems are matters for local police forces and traffic authorities, which are responsible for decisions on where cameras are installed.

The Department provides guidance on the use of speed and red-light cameras and has committed to updating this guidance as part of the Road Safety Strategy, with evidence gathering and assessment forming part of that work. The Department does not maintain a central record of average speed camera systems installed in England or of local authorities that may have received funding support for such installations.

The UK‑Germany Strategic Science and Technology Partnership is designed to strengthen bilateral collaboration on key technologies, providing opportunities for researchers and businesses in the UK, including those based in Northern Ireland, to benefit from leading cutting-edge research and development with German partners. All relevant UK Research and Innovation (UKRI) initiatives, such as the lead agency agreement between the UK Engineering and Physical Sciences Research Council and the German Research Foundation, are open to applicants from across the whole of the UK.

The UK‑Germany Strategic Science and Technology Partnership was launched alongside the Kensington Treaty in July 2025 to accelerate the development of transformative technologies through closer UK-Germany collaboration. Early outcomes include £6 million joint funding for quantum research and development, investment in applied photonics research in Glasgow to help businesses bring new products to market, and an AI partnership between centres in Edinburgh and Stuttgart to speed up AI adoption in industry and the public sector.

The Prime Minister and Chancellor Merz signed the Treaty between the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland and the Federal Republic of Germany on friendship and bilateral cooperation (The Kensington Treaty) on 17 July 2025.

UK and German officials regularly engage to exchange best practices and lessons learnt on industrial decarbonisation, including on issues such as auction design and support schemes, notably through the UK-Germany Climate and Energy partnership, as well as through multilateral fora including the Climate Club, the Industrial Deep Decarbonisation Initiative, and the Breakthrough Agenda.

To address the growing energy demands of AI, the AI Energy Council was established. The Council offers expert insights into preparing the UK’s energy system to manage AI’s energy footprint, as well as harnessing AI’s potential within a modern energy system - aligned with the Clean Power 2030 goals.

Heat network zoning will enable heat sources to be connected to a network. This will allow for strategic heat networks to be built across the country, making use of recoverable heat sources, including data centres, where available.

The department is undertaking research into best practice for connecting heat sources to heat networks. This includes learning from national and international case studies.

The Government is actively working to lower electricity prices by addressing the root causes of high costs. We are reversing years of underinvestment and implementing the largest upgrade to Great Britain’s electricity network in decades, reducing constraint costs and making greater use of affordable renewable energy. Through our Clean Power mission, we are accelerating renewable deployment to lessen the frequency with which gas determines electricity prices. Additionally, Reformed National Pricing will reshape investment decisions and improve system operations. Altogether, these initiatives aim to create a fair, affordable, secure and efficient electricity system, ultimately driving down bills for good.
