To ask the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government, for how long will councillors elected in the local government elections confirmed for May 2027 serve in office.
The Secretary of State confirmed in her oral statement on 7 September 2026 that the plan is for local and regional elections scheduled for May 2027 to go ahead on existing boundaries. Councillors elected in May 2027 will serve for four years unless a structural changes Order is made and any change to terms of office will be set out in that Order. The Government is considering the next stages of the local government reorganisation programme and will set out next steps once that work has concluded.

To ask His Majesty's Government what assessment they have made of the merits of establishing an independent commission to set the rates of allowances for local councillors in England.
Local authorities are responsible for their own scheme of allowances. Each local authority must have an Independent Remuneration Panel to make recommendations about allowance levels and the decisions are rightly made locally. This ensures that allowances are reasonable, proportionate and reflect local circumstances. We think decisions should remain at the local level.

To ask the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government, what assessment he has made of the adequacy of the current statutory framework for parish councillors.
The Government believes that the current statutory framework for parish councillors is proportionate and adequate. When parliamentary time allows, the Government intends to introduce legislation for a range of measures to create a clearer and consistently applied standards and conduct system that will help local elected members to hold themselves and their colleagues to account.
