As the Minister for the Indo-Pacific said in her statement of 21 August, the convictions of Chow Hang-tung and Lee Cheuk-yan are a further demonstration that even peaceful acts of remembrance in Hong Kong are now treated by the authorities as threats to national security. We will continue to raise these concerns with the Hong Kong and Chinese authorities, and we continue to call for the Beijing-imposed National Security Law to be repealed.

The violence that took place during Tanzania's October 2025 elections, including reports of widespread extrajudicial killings and the concealment of bodies, was shocking. The Presidential Commission of Inquiry found evidence that at least 518 people were killed and acknowledged the possibility the actual figure was higher. UN experts pointed to other estimates of potentially thousands of victims. Together with like-minded partners, we have called for the Commission's findings to be published in full and for those responsible for the killing of civilians to be held to account. We have pressed for the Criminal Investigation Commission that is now underway to be transparent and inclusive.
The Government continues to raise the issue of political prisoners, including the case of opposition leader Tundu Lissu, through Ministerial channels and the British High Commission. We are closely monitoring the ongoing harassment, abduction and intimidation of opposition, journalists and civil society actors, as well as the censorship of major media houses, undermining freedom of expression. Our Travel Advice is regularly updated to assist British Nationals in Tanzania, and full consular support is offered at the British High Commission in Dar es Salaam.

The UK is clear that the freedom to hold and express views without censorship, intimidation or unnecessary restriction is a cornerstone of democracy. We remain deeply concerned over reports of human rights violations and abuses against human rights defenders in Balochistan. The British High Commission in Islamabad continues to raise the human rights situation in Balochistan with the Pakistani authorities at the highest levels, and has previously raised the case of Dr. Mahrang Baloch with Pakistan's Minister for Law and Justice
That this House expresses its deep concern regarding the 33-month prison sentence handed to Iranian oil worker and labour activist Yaser Ahmadinejad; notes that Mr Ahmadinejad, a former employee of the Arkan Saless drilling company, was convicted of propaganda against the state and other charges following his peaceful advocacy for fair pay and improved working conditions for contract workers in Iran’s oil and gas fields; further notes reports that his sentencing follows a period of victimisation for his role in voicing the legitimate demands of workers; condemns the ongoing use of the Iranian judicial system to criminalise trade union activity and freedom of expression; calls on the Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office to make urgent representations to the Iranian authorities for the immediate and unconditional release of Mr Ahmadinejad; and further calls for an end to the systemic persecution of all labour activists and the release of all political prisoners currently held in Iran.

The UK remains concerned about the human rights situation in Venezuela, including the treatment of detainees, and we have repeatedly called on the Venezuelan authorities to uphold human rights and cooperate fully with international mechanisms, including in our statement to the Human Rights Council (HRC) on 26 June. As part of our efforts to press for a peaceful, democratic transition in Venezuela, we will continue to reinforce the importance of ensuring that the rights of all Venezuelans are upheld, including members of the church.
