That this House notes with concern the conclusions of the Committee of Public Accounts following their investigation into the sale of County Hall by the London Residuary Body to Shiryama Shokusan Ltd; believes the people of London were cheated over the sale by a combination of Government prejudice, LRB incompetence and dishonesty on the part of the Japanese Shiryama organisation; considers it wholly unacceptable that County Hall should have been sold to a dubious, secretive Japanese company for a use wholly unsuited to such a significant building in such an important location; criticises Whitbread plc for its part in the development of County Hall; and demands that the building be taken back into public ownership by compulsory purchase.
