The Medical Training (Prioritisation) Act 2026 implements the Government’s commitment in the 10-Year Health Plan to prioritise United Kingdom medical graduates for foundation training places, and to prioritise UK medical graduates and other doctors with significant National Health Service experience for specialty training places. Under the act, doctors who have completed, or are completing, the UK Foundation Programme are prioritised for specialty training places.
The recently agreed 2026 Resident Doctors Deal also significantly expands the number of specialty training places by up to 4,500 over the next three years, including 1,000 next year. On 10 August 2026, NHS England announced that more than 350 of these additional specialty training places will be available in England to start in February 2027.

Effective early identification and support is critical to improving outcomes for all children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND), including those with autism.
We have proposed the introduction of National Inclusion Standards, which will support education settings to identify and respond to needs earlier and more consistently, drawing on a broad range of evidence and professional expertise, so that all children and young people can receive the support they need to achieve and thrive.
The National Inclusion Standards will be underpinned by a £200 million training package to ensure that all teachers, educators, teaching assistants, support staff and leaders across early years, schools and post-16 settings can be trained to support pupils with SEND, and a new investment of £3.7 billion to drive more inclusive school estates and create additional specialist places.
We will continue to engage closely with young people, parents and professionals as we develop our reforms and how they will work in practice. The department also engages with the devolved governments at ministerial and official level on a range of areas covering education, skills and family policies and will continue to do so.

The Northern Ireland Office currently allocates funding to support community initiatives through several grants. The Connect Fund supports organisations to strengthen civic East-West relations through a number of innovative projects and is ongoing with funding available on a yearly basis. NIO’s Engagement for Change Fund was recently awarded to the Women’s Resource and Development Agency for the ‘Grow, Lead, Change’ Project which will support community and voluntary sector organisations to more effectively champion their crucial work and the communities they serve. The forthcoming Community Partnership Fund will provide £1m across three years to established voluntary organisations to support grassroots community groups to develop ambitious ideas, build stronger networks and grow capability to access and deliver funding. The Grant Recipient will be announced later this year.
The Northern Ireland Office will continue to assess gaps in funding for local community initiatives, identifying opportunities for future provision.

The government is committed to ensuring that everyone, including children and young people, should have access to and benefit from quality sport and physical activity opportunities.
The government provides the majority of funding for grassroots sport through our arm’s- length body, Sport England, whose work includes providing more opportunities for children and young people from all backgrounds to be active. We are also developing a new PE and School Sport Partnership Network to ensure all young people have equal access to high-quality sport and extracurricular activity. The network will build strong partnerships between schools, local clubs and National Governing Bodies to identify and break down barriers to sport for children who are less active.
In addition, at least £400 million is going to be invested into new and upgraded grassroots sport facilities in communities right across the UK, supporting the Government's Plan for Change. We are now working closely with sporting bodies and local leaders to establish what communities need, including for children and young people, and will then set out further plans.

Every school should actively promote the fundamental British values of democracy, the rule of law, individual liberty, and mutual respect and tolerance for those of different faiths and beliefs. Promotion of these values plays an important role in preparing children and young people for life in a modern and diverse Britain.
Citizenship education equips young people to understand their place in the wider world and provides an important platform for discussions about global events and how they affect them and their communities. Religious education can also help pupils develop an understanding of different faiths and beliefs. Schools should promote critical thinking, logical reasoning and empathy, building children’s resilience to all forms of hatred, including antisemitism and anti-Muslim hostility.
The department has funded £7 million to tackle antisemitism in schools, colleges and universities, including £1 million for an innovation fund supporting projects that improve media literacy, tackle misinformation and promote tolerant debate. We also provide guidance and resources through the department’s Educate Against Hate website.
