On 14 July 2022, the department published advice for schools and other education settings on what to do during a heatwave. Schools are also able to access advice from the Department for Health and Social Care guidance for schools, and the Health and Safety Executive guidance for employers on how to manage high temperatures.
Schools should continue to carry out their own risk assessments to ensure they create safe and healthy environments for pupils and staff.
In November 2021, the department published the revised output specification, setting out the requirements for all new school and college estates to be net zero carbon and climate resilient to a 2oC and 4oC global warming scenario.
The department allocates capital funding each year to schools and those responsible for school buildings to improve and maintain the condition of the school estate. Condition funding can be used to invest in improving the indoor environment and other sustainability measures. We have committed £13.1 billion to improve the condition of schools since 2015, including £1.8 billion allocated for the current financial year.

The Government does not believe there is any case for changing the current arrangements. I am working with EU Member States to convince them and the European Commission of our position.
We believe the current system works for citizens in the UK and there is no evidence that justifies the abolition of daylight saving time, which currently already ensures harmonisation of time in the EU.

The devolution settlements for Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales are each unique and areas that are devolved in one part of the UK may not be devolved in another. This reflects the history and development of the different devolution settlements across the UK. The Secretaries of State for Northern Ireland and Wales and I work closely together to ensure that these settlements work for the people of the various parts of the UK.
In 2014, the Smith Commission considered in great depth what new powers should be devolved to the Scottish Parliament, and the report was agreed by all five of Scotland’s main political parties. The Scotland Act 2016 delivers on the Smith Commission Agreement in full, and we are committed to implementing the Act. The Scottish devolution settlement strikes the right balance for Scotland and now is not the time to reopen this issue.
