The Mining Remediation Authority exists primarily to manage the legacy of Great Britain's coal mining past, and its statutory responsibilities remain focused on former coal mining activities, and as such the MRA does not hold data on metal mines.
The MRA’ provides technical advice, when requested, on hazards associated with historic metal mining, as part of its role as a 24/7 emergency response organisation and a Category 2 responder under the Civil Contingencies Act 2004.
Between 1 April 2020 and 31 March 2026, the Mining Remediation Authority responded to 4,802 incidents and claims across Great Britain. Of these, 1,785 cases were determined to be attributable to former coal mining activities.

Public health is being prioritised. The Clean Water Bill will deliver cleaner rivers, lakes, and seas, including by providing the legislative tools to ensure targets are ambitious and enabling pre-pipe solutions to reduce sewage spills.
The Environment Agency (EA) monitors water quality at designated bathing waters, including 15 in Torbay, testing for bacteria which indicate faecal contamination and potential risks to human health. Where bathing waters have poorer or deteriorating water quality, the EA works with partners to understand the causes and identify opportunities for improvement. This helps people to make informed choices about where and when to enter the water.

This Government takes agricultural water pollution seriously. The department are bringing agricultural regulations together into a single, clear and robust set of requirements to help reduce water pollution. The detail of these reforms is still being developed.
Defra recently consulted on the best way to regulate the use of sewage sludge on farms. The consultation sought views on options to make the regulatory framework more agile as new evidence emerges about contaminant risks.
The department continue to develop the evidence base on contaminants in sludge by bringing stakeholders together to identify evidence gaps and shape future research priorities. Defra also are supporting the work of the water industry-funded Chemicals Investigation Programme to explore new treatment technologies to remove contaminants from sludge.

Thames Water assets, including sewage treatment works, pumping stations, sewers and surface water outfalls, are regularly considered in pollution investigations within the River Roding catchment. Thames Water is progressing Environment Agency approved Asset Management Period 8 (AMP8) schemes, including storm overflow investigations, enhanced monitoring and infrastructure upgrades, to reduce pollution and sewage discharge impacts.

The Poultry Sector Growth Plan is being developed by industry, supported by the Government, to identify opportunities for the sector to improve its productivity and profitability. There is clear demand for high quality, domestically produced chicken meat and eggs. The plan will identify ways that enable our domestic poultry sector to meet this challenge sustainably and in line with key government policies such as the Animal Welfare Strategy, Farming Roadmap and Environmental Improvement Plan 2025. In doing so we will be strengthening our national food security whilst balancing broader environmental, animal welfare and food security objectives.

To ask the Secretary of State for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs, if her Department will carry out an investigation into the prevalence of polyfluorinated alkyl substances (PFAS) pollution in the water supply in Lancashire.
The Drinking Water Inspectorate (DWI) regulates the quality of public water supplies in England, including Lancashire, and requires water companies to test for a wide range of substances, including PFAS, to ensure supplies remain safe.
Following a public enquiry regarding reported PFAS contamination near Thornton-Cleveleys, DWI's records confirm that United Utilities does not draw water for public supply from abstraction points in the affected area.
DWI continues to monitor water quality across Lancashire and will investigate should new evidence of contamination affecting a public water supply emerge.

To ask the Secretary of State for Energy Security and Net Zero, what comparative assessment he has made of the maximum level of financial penalties that can be issued for offshore oil spills between the UK and other countries, including Norway and the United States.
The Department has not undertaken a formal comparative assessment of the maximum financial penalties that may be imposed for offshore oil spills in other countries. The UK operates a comprehensive offshore environmental regulatory regime which includes civil sanctions, criminal offences and other enforcement measures designed to secure compliance and protect the marine environment. The Government keeps the effectiveness of this regime under review.
