To ask the Secretary of State for Work and Pensions, what assessment she has made of the potential merits of locating all job centres on (a) affordable and (b) easily accessible public transport routes.
The DWP considers a number of different factors in areas where we expect a demand for our services. The Department seeks properties in both major cities or more rural locations that meet the business requirements for a Jobcentre. We currently have over 800 Jobcentre offices across all constituencies in Great Britain with over 190 new sites opened as part of Plan for Jobs.
Accessible transport links for both colleagues and customers is included in the planning process.

Information and updates on temporary Jobcentres is currently being developed for GOV.UK, with plans to publish later in March. It should be noted however that, due to commercial sensitivities, information about any temporary Jobcentre can only be published once a lease is signed.

DWP is exploring potential options to take premises, on a temporary basis, predominantly in large metropolitan areas where we expect to see increased demand for the Department’s services. The Department has opened three temporary Jobcentre sites to date in Oldham, Ashton-under-Lyne and Crawley.
DWP is currently negotiating leases for a significant number of retail and office properties, in major centres, that meet the planning requirements for a jobcentre, with public access, good transport links and accessibility for both colleagues and customers. Location plans cannot be confirmed until commercial negotiations for each site conclude, however as leases are signed we will write to local MPs and provide the details of all sites on GOV.uk.

There are currently 639 Jobcentres across the UK. DWP is evaluating the existing estates capacity and exploring options for new, temporary, premises to respond to the increased demand for services across the UK. Parliament will be updated once firm decisions are made on any new premises.

There are no job losses or transfers planned at Birkenhead Jobcentre.
Whilst there have been some recruitment exercises in Cardiff and Blackpool, these are not linked to Birkenhead and no jobs are being transferred from Birkenhead Jobcentre to any other locations.

I have a vulnerable constituent who lives in Stansted Mountfitchet but has to travel an hour and a half by public transport to Braintree in order to access a jobcentre. Will the Minister please review jobcentre provision in my constituency, specifically in Uttlesford district?

I thank my hon. Friend for the work she does on behalf of her constituents. I can confirm that we will continue to work with community-based partner organisations, including Saffron Walden Town Council, to ensure support and the delivery of outreach. Also, for vulnerable claimants and those in remote areas, alternative attendance arrangements can be introduced.

There are currently no plans to put this information in the House of Commons Library as the information is in the public domain. A search facility is available on gov.uk which enables the public to find the nearest Jobcentre Plus office for the specific post code entered in to the search tool.

There are no plans to publish estimated savings which will be accrued from co-location sites. Overall, we expect to make savings in the order of £135 million a year for the next 10 years by merging offices, through reduced running costs and making best use of office space available.

Since the Written Ministerial Statement laid out in Parliament on 5 July 2017 confirming our plan to rationalise the DWP estate, the Department has closed 46 jobcentres up to and including 20 December 2017.
The staff and services from 26 jobcentres have merged into nearby, larger Jobcentre offices, and there have been 20 co-locations with Local Authorities.

There is currently a search facility to help find the local Jobcentre Plus Office which serves a customerâs and partnerâs specific postcode. This is available at Jobcentre Plus Local Office Search - Gov UK . The data behind the tool is regularly reviewed and maintained to remain up to date.
Department for Work & Pensions use an internal system holding postcodes covered by each Jobcentre, to allow staff to signpost customer queries and work tasks to the correct owning office. However, an individual claimant may elect to use a different jobcentre if that is more convenient for them.
