Annual food and non-alcoholic beverages price inflation was 1.3% in July 2026, according to the latest Office for National Statistics figures, suggesting drought impacts have not yet fully materialised in food prices.
Defra anticipates that continued drought and future El Niño effects could affect yields and increase production costs, placing some upward pressure on food prices. However, global supply and demand are still expected to remain the primary drivers of UK food prices and any impacts of the drought are likely to take several months to appear in annual inflation figures. Defra continues to monitor effects on the food sector.

Government is taking seriously the impacts of the Middle East Conflict on the UK’s food and farming sectors and monitoring the effects of the crisis as they emerge.
This Government is taking action to ease that pressure. We are aware that fertiliser prices have increased and are committed to keeping costs for farmers down.

We recognise the concerns about rising costs associated with the conflict in the Middle East. On 21 April, my Rt. Hon. Friend, the Chancellor of the Exchequer set out the Government's approach to support for businesses and families with the impacts of the conflict.
Regulations relating to the Nutrient Profiling Model (NPM) are not major drivers of food price inflation.
We have launched a consultation on the proposed application of the updated NPM to advertising and promotions restrictions, open until 17 June. A consultation-stage impact assessment, setting out the direct costs to businesses and the intended health outcomes, was published alongside this.
The current NPM is approximately 20 years out of date and does not reflect the latest evidence, particularly on free sugars, which are more strongly correlated with poor health outcomes, including obesity.

The Government recognises that rising food prices can put pressure on household budgets, particularly for those on lower incomes. The Government monitors food price pressures through the Office for National Statistics’ inflation statistics and wider evidence on household spending.
In the 12 months to April 2026, food and non‑alcoholic beverage prices rose by 3.0% (CPIH), down from 3.7% in the 12 months to March. ONS analysis shows lower‑income households spend a larger share of their income on essentials such as food, energy and housing, meaning they can be more exposed to increases in these costs.
Reducing inflation is central to easing household cost pressures, and the Government is taking action to bear down on prices and support households.

Food and drink prices showed an annual rate of inflation of 3.3% in the year to February 2026, in the most recently published inflation figures for the UK, released by the Office for National Statistics. This is a decrease from 3.6% in January 2026.
General inflation in the UK was 3.0% in February 2026, unchanged from January 2026.
