To ask the Secretary of State for Business and Trade, what recent assessment his Department has made of the potential impact of adopting single/double summer time on levels of energy consumption.
The Government believes the current daylight-saving arrangements represent the optimal use of the available daylight across the UK. Therefore, we have no plans to introduce single summertime, double summertime, or other such changes. Since the Government does not intend to make changes to the existing system, we have not conducted assessments of the impact on the retail and hospitality sectors, on levels of energy consumption or crime.

To ask His Majesty's Government what consideration they have given to keeping British Summer Time through the winter to reduce energy demand.
The Government believes the current daylight-saving arrangements represent the optimal use of the available daylight across the UK.
While there is the potential for some benefits from a change in the current arrangements, there is also a real risk of negative impacts. A change to permanent summertime or double summertime may also have significant impacts on certain sectors and businesses.
There is insufficient evidence to support changing the current system of clock changes, including for energy usage.

An exceptionally wide-ranging cost benefit analysis would need to be performed to inform a decision on changing the current system, especially given the uncertainty that many businesses are already facing as a result of COVID-19.
