Low and stable inflation is vital for growth and investment. The independent Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) at the Bank of England are responsible monetary policy, and the MPC has the government’s full support as it acts to return inflation to target sustainably.
The most important thing the government can do to bring down inflation is to get borrowing down and stick to our fiscal rules. We have already reduced borrowing by nearly 1% of GDP in the last year and we are set to reduce borrowing faster than any other G7 country by 2030.
We have also supported the MPC by directly bearing down on prices. Action taken at the Budget will reduce inflation by 0.4ppt in 2026-27, through measures on energy bills, transport costs and fuel duty.

The Government remains committed to ensuring British businesses are internationally competitive. From 2027 the British Industrial Competitiveness Scheme will reduce electricity costs for over 10,000 eligible businesses, reducing costs by up to £40 per megawatt hour. The British Industry Supercharger currently supports around 550 of the most electricity-intensive businesses. From 1 April 2026 the relief from network charges was uplifted from 60% to 90% for existing recipients of the British Industry Supercharger.

To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer, what comparative assessment her Department has made of the (a) VAT Registration Threshold and (b) rate of inflation between 2014 and 2026.
At £90,000, the UK has a higher VAT registration threshold than any EU country and the joint highest in the OECD. This reflects the Government’s approach to balance the impacts on small businesses, with the needs of the wider economy and the public finances. Such a comparatively high threshold means the majority of UK businesses are not in the VAT system at all, reducing administrative burdens and supporting growth.
