To ask His Majesty's Government what consideration they gave to the impact, if any, on steel supplies to the defence industry in the UK when assessing the changes to tariff-free quotas on category 4 galvanised steel imports.
To ask His Majesty's Government what consideration they gave to the impact, if any, on steel supplies to the defence industry in the UK when assessing the changes to tariff-free quotas on category 4 galvanised steel imports.
The measure aims to strike the right balance for UK industry, protecting domestic production while maintaining a secure supply. We need more UK steel in our defence industries - relying on imports at a time of global uncertainty puts the resilience and security of supply chains at risk. We have engaged extensively with industry, including the defence sector, to inform the design of the measure and have sized our quotas appropriately.
The Government continues to engage with producers and downstream users to understand the impact of the measure and will carry out a full review after 12 months.

The Government is closely monitoring the utilisation of new quotas and is hearing feedback from affected businesses ahead of reviewing the measure in full after 12 months. As the measure is still in its first quarter and the transitional arrangement is in place, it is too early to draw firm conclusions about its impacts now. The Explanatory Memoranda to the legislation that implemented the measure set out the expected impacts on different sectors and businesses across the supply chain.

To ask the Secretary of State for Business, Innovation, Science and Trade, what assessment he has made of the potential impact of the revised steel safeguard quota arrangements on stock availability and supply chain resilience for UK manufacturers during the first quarter of 2027.
The UK’s steel safeguard expired on 30 June in line with WTO rules. The Government is closely monitoring the implementation of the new steel trade measure and will continue to engage with businesses on the impacts, including stock availability and supply chain resilience. We will also review the full measure after 12 months. Since the measure has only been in force for two months and a transitional arrangement has been in place during the first quarter, quota utilisation patterns will take some time to adjust.

The UK Government works with international partners to set annual catch limits for shared fish stocks, informed by the best available scientific advice on the state of those stocks. When setting fishing opportunities for 2027, we will continue to balance the requirements of the Fisheries Act and Joint Fisheries Statement.
For mackerel, no decisions have been made on fishing opportunities for 2027. The relevant coastal States, including the UK, will consider the scientific advice when it becomes available and discuss catch limits and management measures during the annual autumn negotiations.
The term ‘whitebait’ may be used to describe a range of small and young fish species, including forage fish. Any decisions on catch limits or management measures will therefore depend on the stock concerned. Since March 2024, the UK Government has prohibited the fishing of sandeels within English waters and, from 2021, the UK has not allocated its sandeel quota to be fished.
The UK Government recognises the ecological importance of forage fish species, including sprat, herring and sandeel, for the role they play as a food source within the marine ecosystem and that their function and role should be considered when setting fishing opportunities.
