That this House congratulates the New Cross Fire Parents Committee on realising at last their ambition to raise a permanent public memorial to their sons and daughters; Patrick Cummings, Andrew Gooding, Peter Campbell, Gerry Paul Francis, Steve Collins, Patricia Johnson, Rosaline Henry, Lloyd Hall, Humphrey Geoffrey Brown, Owen Thompson, Yvonee Ruddock, Glenton Powell, Paul Ruddock and Anthony Berbeck, who died in the New Cross Fire on 18th January 1981; applauds the unvieling of the plaques by Mrs Sybil Phoenix MBE at Lewisham Town Hall on 10th February; recognises the acute and continuing suffering of the families resulting from their loss and the fact that no one has been brought to justice for the crimes committed, but trusts that some comfort may now be afforded to them and their friends by this public recognition of their tragedy.

That this House is appalled at proposals from the NHS Executive to sell off the Memorial Hall and Cenotaph within the grounds of Darlington Memorial Hospital; reminds those responsible that the Hall was built by public subscription to honour the local men who gave their lives for their country in the First World War and that it also contains the names of the men and women who died fighting for freedom during the Second World War; believes that the building and grounds must remain fully accessible to the public of Darlington so that they can properly pay their respects to the war dead of the town; and calls on the Government, in making any decision on the Hall and grounds, to take fully into account the strong feelings of attachment felt by the local community.
