Dr. Pugh: To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will reduce the tax burden on small shops. [213437]
Dawn Primarolo: This Government's commitment to small businesses has been clearly demonstrated by our actions--we have: cut the
small companies' corporation tax rates from 23 per cent. to 19 per cent.; introduced 40 per cent. first year
capital allowances for small companies, with an enhanced rate of 50 per cent. for 2004-05; introduced R and D tax credits
with a special payable credit for small companies; and simplification schemes to make VAT easier. The integrated HMRC will be
working to minimise compliance burdens on small businesses by improving the service they offer.
But every profitable business must pay its fair share of tax.
