Between 1 January 1997 and 23 January 2006 a total of 360 whales were reported as stranded in the United Kingdom, and three were reported as bycatch. Table 1 provides detailed figures, broken down by year.These data are collected under the Defra-funded Cetacean and Turtle Strandings Scheme. The scheme is carried out by the Natural History Museum in partnership with the Institute of Zoology and Scottish Agricultural College. Not only are all stranded animals recorded, but post-mortem examinations are carried out on some of the animal carcasses to establish the exact cause of death.The information received from this scheme has helped to inform the commissioning of two further research projects. The first is looking into the effect of acoustic noise on cetaceans, through examination of cetacean ‘ears' removed during post-mortem examination. The second, an observer monitoring scheme, places observers on certain fishing vessels to observe whether there are any incidents of bycatch.

The figures include all fatalities due to train accidents and the movement of trains reported to the Health and Safety Executive's (HSE's) HM Railway Inspectorate. However, 1998-99 was the first time in 5 years (ie since privatisation) that no passenger was killed in a train accident. The figures for suicides are included in the total fatalities figures. The total figures also include fatalities to trespassers which have averaged well over 100 a year. The figures in this table are based on published statistics, subject to subsequent change by Coroners verdicts, which are contained in the HSE Chief Inspector of Railways' Annual Reports on Railway Safety for Great Britain, and are available in the House Library.

Mr. Gordon Prentice: To ask the Secretary of State for the Home Department how many prisoners have embarked on a hunger strike in each year since 1987; and how many (a) died and (b) gave up but suffered permanent damage to their health. [64261] Mr. George Howarth: Definitions and methods of recording this type of incidents have changed over time, and the Prison Service has employed the broader definition of "food refusal" since 1989. Information on incidence of food refusal prior to 1989 is not held centrally. The number of reported incidents of food refusal for each calendar year since 1989 is given in the table. It should be noted that the figures may include a number of incidents concerning the same prisoner. Three prisoners have died as a result of food refusal during this period. Information on prisoners who ceased refusing food, but then suffered permanent damage to their health could only be obtained at disproportionate cost. The available information is given in the attached table. It is not possible to identify deaths certified as due in part or whole to other non-prescription drugs, as there is no definitive list. For suicides the classification suicides has been used and for deaths the classification injury and poisoning undetermined whether accidentally or purposely inflicted has been used. This corresponds to codes E950-E959, and E980-E989 (excluding E988.8), of the International Classification of Diseases Ninth Revision (ICD9).
