This issue has yet to be discussed in detail within the framework of the Transatlantic Trade and Investment Partnership TTIP negotiations and is unlikely to be until the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) delivers an opinion on the public health, safety and environmental impact of this treatment process. The Government will consider its position when the EFSA opinion becomes available.

Risk based surveillance to ensure imported shell eggs from other member states have been produced in compliance with the conventional cage ban is continuing. Inspectors are conducting checks on batches of eggs on a weekly basis at all primary importers using ultraviolet light analysis and by checking against member states' compliant producer lists. The UK's full enforcement strategy is set out in the written ministerial statement of 6 December 2011, Official Report, columns 15-19WS.

For some time, the free-range egg sector has been expanding steadily in response to growing demand as public awareness of production welfare standards has increased. The following table shows that since 2000, the percentage of overall production has increased from 20% in 2000 to almost 50% in the first quarter of 2012.
