Mrs. Curtis-Thomas: To ask the Secretary of State for Transport how much transport infrastructure maintenance cost the Government in each year from 1990 to 2003. [130455] Mr. McNulty: Transport infrastructure maintenance is taken to encompass maintenance on Road and Rail only, and is detailed as follows. Table 1 shows the cost of maintenance from 1991-2002 road maintenance. Numbers are as detailed in the National Road Maintenance Condition Survey (NRMCS) annual report. These numbers are also given as cash prices. Rail figures are detailed in Table 1 for the years 1996-2003, and have been taken from the Railtrack 2001 Network Management Statement (2001), and the 2003 Network Rail Annual Return. These have also been shown in cash prices. It is important to note that these figures also may include non-Government expenditure, but it is not possible to disaggregate this out. Rail figures prior to 1996 are not immediately accessible and to obtain these numbers would present a disproportionate cost. _________________________________________________________________________________________________. Mrs. Curtis-Thomas: To ask the Secretary of State for Transport (1) how many trunk road projects are proposed; [125512] (2) if he will make a statement on the progress with improving the road system. [125513] Mr. Jamieson: My Department is only responsible for road projects in England outside London. My right hon. Friend, the Secretary of State's, statement to this House on 9 July made clear our commitment to improving the nation's roads and other forms of transport, in both the immediate and the longer terms. The Government's Target Programme of Improvements currently contains 72 major trunk road improvement proposals tackling congestion, providing safety benefits and relieving communities of traffic. Since June last year, 12 other major trunk road schemes have been opened. A number of other major trunk road improvements have been proposed, mainly through the multi-modal study process. My right hon. Friend the Secretary of State's announcement covered 11 of these studies. The Highways Agency have been asked to do further development work on over 30 road proposals, includingactive traffic management and other technology related improvements on various parts of the motorway and trunk road network. Similar work is also being carried out on other projects following our responses to eight other multi-modal studies within the last two years. Since December 2000, over 60 major road schemes, often bringing safety and quality of life benefits, have been proposed by local authorities and received provisional or full approval by the Government to proceed. We are expecting around 20 further such proposals to be submitted as part of this year's Local Transport Settlement process.

Mrs. Curtis-Thomas: To ask the Secretary of State for Transport, Local Government and the Regions what plans he has to maintain the A565 between Bootle and the Seaforth flyover. [3250] Mr. Jamieson: I have asked the Chief Executive of the Highways Agency, Tim Matthews, to write to my hon. Friend. Letter from Tim Matthews to Mrs. Curtis-Thomas, dated 12 July 2001: The Transport Minister, David Jamieson, has asked me to reply to your recent question about plans to maintain the A565 trunk road between Bootle and the Seaforth Flyover. I am aware of your previous concerns about the appearance of the A565--which is currently a trunk road maintained by this Agency. As you may know, we have announced proposals to "detrunk" this section of the A565 and it is planned that ownership and management responsibility for the road will transfer to the Local Authority, Sefton Metropolitan Borough Council, by June 2003. Until then we will continue to maintain the road through our Managing Agent, Lancashire County Council's Highways Consultancy. In my letter of 6 February (copy enclosed) I said that we intended to work with Sefton's Cleaning Services Manager to improve the standard of street sweeping and litter removal. Unfortunately, progress on improving the appearance of the Bootle to Seaforth Flyover section of the road has not been as swift as I would have liked, for which I apologise. We have inspected this stretch of road on several occasions since I wrote to you. The only significant issue concerns the ongoing problems with the standard of sweeping and cleaning of the road provided by Sefton Metropolitan Borough Council. As a result, we have, as an extra measure, instructed our Term Maintenance Contractor, Edmund Nuttall Ltd., to remove all weeds by hand and to clear the detritus within the next fortnight. In addition to this, we are in discussion with the Council's Cleaning Services Manager with regards to road sweeping and cleaning. Regular cleaning is important to inhibit weed growth, preventing the build up of material that allows them to grow, and increasing the effectiveness of spraying them. We expect to see improvements to the road's appearance as a result of these measures in the near future. It is for Sefton MBC to decide how it will spend this allocation, but expenditure should be in accordance with the aims and objectives of the local transport plan for Merseyside. The indicative allocations for 2002-03 to 2005-06 are Merseyside area wide, and the five local authorities will together decide the exact allocation to each on an annual basis. Financial 2000-01 The allocation to Sefton MBC for 2000-01 was £2.847 million. This represents Sefton's share of the £22.967 million block allocation to Merseyside for the maintenance and integrated transport programme contained in the `provisional' Merseyside Local Transport Plan.
