Mr. Browne: To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what plans the Government have for the regeneration of rural town centres.

Mr. Macdonald: Regeneration of rural town centres is a matter for local authorities and for the enterprise agencies. The Government
provide a framework through National Planning Policy Guidelines, which aim to ensure that planning decisions support rural town
centres and encourage good practice through projects like the Small Towns Initiative.
