To ask His Majesty's Government what assessment they have made of the negative impact on soil cohesion when trackside trees and bushes are cut back hard and the roots destroyed by poison, or root killing herbicides, by Network Rail.
Network Rail recognises that vegetation can both support and affect the stability of railway embankments and cuttings. While roots help stabilise soil by absorbing moisture, vegetation can also increase risks such as soil drying and cracking, or rockfall.
To manage these risks, Network Rail operates in line with its vegetation and earthworks standards. Where trees are felled for safety or operational reasons, stump treatments are sometimes used to prevent regrowth, but they are never applied to retained trees or branches. In many locations, Network Rail cuts trees back to encourage regrowth, helping to maintain both biodiversity and soil stability.
Based on information provided by Network Rail, the Government’s assessment is that these measures help to minimise the risk of negative impacts on soil cohesion and support a balanced approach to safety, performance and environmental protection in managing lineside vegetation.

The Food Standards Agency (FSA) has advised that no assessment of the relative risks to human health has been undertaken on these five topics. However, risk assessments are undertaken on individual issues as they arise. The protection of public health from risks which may arise in connection with the consumption of food is paramount to the FSA and comprehensive legislation exists to ensure that food sold in the United Kingdom is safe to eat.

That this House believes that whatever the outcome of debates on the risks and the merits of genetically modified crops and foods, consumers must be able to choose whether or not they eat GM crops, and farmers must have confidence that they will be reimbursed for any loss caused by the inadvertent spread of GM crops onto their land; further believes that to achieve this, all future GM crop trials and any other GM planting must be carried out according to rules which prevent conventional and organic crops being contaminated by GM traits; notes the European Commission decision that such rules are the responsibility of national parliaments, and so welcomes the introduction of the Genetically Modified Organisms Bill; and believes that the debates on this Bill should allow Parliament to determine science-based rules for any future planting of genetically modified organisms which will stop contamination and preserve consumer choice.
