That this House recognises that while the Pap Smear has been successful in reducing deaths from cervical cancer, 1,200 women each year still die from this disease, which is treatable if detected early enough; notes the publication in September 1999 of the NHS Health Technology Programme report entitled, A Systematic Review of the Role of Human Papillomavirus Testing Within a Cervical Screening Programme, which recommends the introduction of testing for the human papillomavirus (HPV), the cause of cervical cancer, for the management of women with borderline smears; and urges the Government to take urgent action on this recommendation.
