That this House believes that the salt intake of people in the United Kingdom is too high, leading to raised blood pressure which in turn is responsible for increasing the number of strokes and heart attacks, the two commonest causes of death in the United Kingdom; is aware that three-quarters of people's salt intake currently comes from salt contained in processed food; acknowledges that some major food retailers like Sainsbury's, Asda, Co-op and Marks and Spencer and food manufacturers like Heinz and Kellogg's have announced reductions in the salt content of some of their own-brand foods of between 10 per cent and 25 per cent; and calls on the Government proactively to encourage the rest of the food industry, including manufacturers, retailers, restaurateurs and caterers, to reduce the salt content of their food by a similar amount.

That this House believes that people's salt intake in the United Kingdom is too high, leading to increases in blood pressure which in turn is responsible for an increasing number of strokes and heart attacks, the two commonest causes of death in the United Kingdom; recognises that 80 per cent. of the salt intake in the general population now comes from salt added to processed food; and calls on the Government to do everything possible to reduce salt intake by putting pressure on the food industry to reduce the salt content of processed food, as has been shown to be possible by the ASDA initiative where the salt content of their processed food has been reduced by between 10 per cent. and 25 per cent.

That this House notes that 16th April is the fourth anniversary of the death in controversial circumstances of West Midlands police officer Tony Salt; notes that during that time no inquest has been held into the cause of Mr Salt's death; further notes that charges against two men who apparently confessed while in the custody of West Midlands police officers to robbing Mr Salt were quietly dropped when it became obvious that the confessions were fraudulent; also notes that PC Mark Berry, who was with Salt at the time of his death and who gave four different versions of what happened, was permitted to retire on medical grounds before disciplinary charges could be brought; is not aware of any disciplinary action being taken against Detective Constables 9669 Gerald Harris and 7782 Gerald Doyle and Detective Sergeants 7263 Alan Shakespeare and 7253 Richard Davies, who were responsible for obtaining the fraudulent confessions; is not aware of any other area of the country where a police officer could die on duty, for no criminal charges to be pending and for no inquest to be held; and calls on the coroner, Dr Richard Whittington, to hold an inquest or to resign.
