The Minister will have seen that, yesterday, York and North Yorkshire Combined Authority was allocated £380 million from the local transport fund. When we have a local Mayor in place, could that money be used to fund road safety improvements through capital projects?

May I congratulate the Prime Minister on this statement? He is so right when he says that the economy of the north needs both east-west and north-south connectivity. Does he agree that the challenge we face in transport is not, as sometimes articulated, between local and national investment—what we need...

In Control Period 5 (2014-2019), Government made available £235m through the Strategic Freight Network fund, investing in projects to support rail freight growth. The route out of the Port of Southampton is benefiting from a programme of investment to enable longer freight trains to operate between there and the North / Midlands.
There is funding available in Control Period 6 (2019-2024) for continued improvements to the rail network. Government is working with Network Rail and the freight industry to develop options for investment over the next five years.

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport, how many tunnels for hedgehogs his Department constructed under (a) railway lines and (b) roads in each month of the last 24 months for which data is available.
Network Rail’s estate is large and varied, and includes railway tunnels, cuttings and bridges, all of which offer habitats for animals to thrive in. Network Rail manages these habitats sensitively in order to encourage biodiversity while ensuring the safety of the railway. They do not hold data on any tunnels under railway lines that may have been specifically built for hedgehogs.
Highways England use a range of mitigation measures to reduce any danger to animals in the delivery of their schemes. These include tunnels, culverts, underpasses, adapted farm crossings and species-specific structures. They do these for a range of animals, not specifically for hedgehogs. Appropriate fencing and planting may also be included to encourage use of the crossings and/or to integrate them within the surrounding environment.

To ask the Secretary of State for Transport, whether there is any (a) statutory and (b) contractual obligation on Abellio Greater Anglia Railways to provide shelter for passengers at Derby Road Station in Ipswich.
Greater Anglia is obligated to install at least one shelter per platform at Derby Road station by 31 December 2020. In addition, as the demand for this station by passengers grows, Greater Anglia would have to review whether their current facilities is appropriate for the footfall experienced by the station and make the appropriate changes.
