Mrs. Curtis-Thomas: To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions how much capital programme (local transport plan) has been allocated to Sefton Council for 2001 to 2006; and if he will indicate the sums allocated to support schemes relating to (a) travel to schools, (b) walkwise, (c) traffic management and signing, (d) CCTV televisions, (e) cycling measures, (f) bridge maintenance, (g) principal road maintenance, (h) quality of life, including local safety schemes, street lighting, traffic calming and home zones, and (i) forward planning, in (i) 2000-01 and (ii) each year since 1994. Of the total allocation for Merseyside for 2001-02, £5.163 million has been allocated to Sefton Metropolitan Borough Council (MBC). This covers both maintenance (principal road and bridge maintenance) and the integrated transport block, which includes the other elements referred to in the question. It is for Sefton MBC to decide how it will spend this allocation, but expenditure should be in accordance with the aims and objectives of the local transport plan for Merseyside. The indicative allocations for 2002-03 to 2005-06 are Merseyside area wide, and the five local authorities will together decide the exact allocation to each on an annual basis. Financial 2000-01 The allocation to Sefton MBC for 2000-01 was £2.847 million. This represents Sefton's share of the £22.967 million block allocation to Merseyside for the maintenance and integrated transport programme contained in the `provisional' Merseyside Local Transport Plan. Financial years 1994-99 Prior to the introduction of Local Transport Plans, local transport funding was allocated under Transport Policies and Programmes system. Mr. Jenkin: To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions if he will list the (a) trunk roads that are carried by a bridge, or which pass through a tunnel, of at least 600 m in length and (b) the dates on which such bridges and tunnels are set to be renewed. [113114] Mr. Hill: In England there are 33 bridges and three tunnels with a length greater than 600 m, carrying 21 different trunk roads. This figure excludes trunk roads transferring to the Greater London Authority in July 2000 as these will be de-trunked. All these structures have long residual lives and there are no plans for their renewal in the foreseeable future. There is an ongoing programme of works to ensure all structures remain safe and serviceable. The Secretary of State has made it clear that, in the context of the Transport Bill, he does not have any plans to charge on existing structures that are not already tolled. I have asked the Chief Executive of the Highways Agency, Mr. Peter Nutt, to write to the hon. Member with a list and place a copy in the Library. [97070] Mr. Hill: [holding answer 2 November 1999]: I have asked the Chief Executive of the Highways Agency, Mr. Peter Nutt, to write to the hon. Member. Letter from Peter Nutt to Mr. Bernard Jenkin, dated 4 November 1999: You recently asked the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions for information concerning weight restrictions and monitoring of structures on the motorway and trunk road network. There are no weight restrictions currently in force on the main carriageways of motorways and major trunk roads. However, there are a small number of structures, primarily supporting slip roads and interchanges, which have some form of weight restriction pending repairs or strengthening. The numbers and restrictions can vary as repairs and strengthening takes place but I am preparing an up to date list for you. You also ask for a list of where the Highways Agency is undertaking monitoring because of concerns about the strength of a structure. Special monitoring of structures is being undertaken for a number of reasons on a number of bridges. This can vary from week to week and the details are not held centrally. I am assembling the information you request and shall write to you shortly listing those structures subject to weight restriction as well as those where special monitoring is being undertaken because of concerns about strength.
