That this House applauds the efforts made by the trustees and staff of the Northern Racing School who have in the past 10 years developed a northern-based centre of excellence, that has greatly benefited those who work, rely upon or invest in the British thoroughbred racing industry; notes the success of this body's recent charity race days held at Pontefract (27th May) and Doncaster (28 May), which raised much-needed funds for the school's residential hostel based near Doncaster, South Yorkshire; realises however that additional resources need to be garnered to improve upon and to keep pace with the ever changing training and work techniques in the industry; and calls upon Her Majesty's Government to press all bodies connected with racing and the EU to financially support the development of this excellent and necessary organisation.

That this House condemns the decision by National Power to close the Thorpe Marsh Power Station which will result in the loss of over 200 jobs and will seriously affect the chances for survival of both Bentley and Hatfield collieries; believes that the closure has been brought forward because of the increased use of gas fired power stations and the guaranteed market for nuclear generated power along with the fact that the Government has not got, and shows no signs of developing, an energy policy; and calls for the President of the Board of Trade to intervene and stop the closure which would save the jobs of the power workers and those affected in mining, rail and engineering if the closure goes ahead.

That this House wishes to express its deep disappointment in the Horserace Betting Levy Board for its decision not to give any financial assistance to Doncaster Metropolitan Borough Council for the development of new grandstand facilities at its Doncaster racecourse; and further is disturbed that enough assistance is not at the moment being given by the same body to race courses like Doncaster, without whom such monies would not be raised.
