That this House congratulates the British chemist, Professor John A. Pople, on being awarded the 1998 Nobel Prize for Chemistry; notes that this has been awarded for his pioneering work in the development of computational methods in quantum chemistry; notes that he began his work at Cambridge University, that among many other honours he has been awarded the prestigious Marlow Medal of the Faraday Division of The Royal Society of Chemistry, and that he is a Fellow of the Royal Society; notes that quantum chemistry is today used within all branches of chemistry and molecular physics and affords a deeper understanding of molecular processes that cannot be obtained from experiments alone; applauds his selfless dissemination of his scientic work as being in the finest traditions of open access to scientific knowledge; notes further that computational chemistry has widespread applications and has greatly increased our knowledge of the inner structure of matter; and expresses the hope that the development and strenghening of the UK's science base can provide a solid foundation for the continued future scientific success of British science.
