Can he tell me, in my role as the Prime Minister’s trade envoy to Nigeria, what the situation is there with regard to the availability of aircraft? I thank my right hon. Friend for helping, with other Departments, to bring so many of my constituents home safely. Can he tell me, in my role as the Prime Minister’s trade envoy to Nigeria, what the situation is there with regard to the availability of aircraft? How many more repatriation trips are we looking to make?
My hon. Friend’s great work as a trade envoy is known throughout the House. Some commercial routes are still available, we are keeping the international travel advice under constant review, and we are still, on a daily basis, organising charter flights to bring the remaining overseas British nationals home. I think there are around 20,000 still to repatriate.

We estimate that more than 1.3 million people have returned to the UK via commercial routes, the majority through our work to keep the vital routes open.

I can certainly confirm that the project originated in the coalition Government, and it would be quite disingenuous of any political party that was part of it to seek to distance itself from that decision. Of course, I can make no statement whatever about the direction, since that is the subject of a continued process of consultation and review.

Once again, my hon. Friend is a true champion of his constituency, and he refers specifically to Henley Town Council. When a council has a good relationship and partnership with a bus operating company, decisions about where and how buses should run can be made close to home to ensure that services are run how passengers want. I want buses to be the most convenient, accessible and greenest form of transport across our country. This is not just about funding; it is about good relationships between local authorities and bus operating companies.

Goring and Streatley station has not been nominated for the current round of Access for All funding as it already has step free access to and between all platforms.

Goring & Streatley station was improved in September 2016 when a new footbridge and lifts opened, allowing step-free access to both platforms. DfT Minor Works funding has been used to make further accessibility improvements at the station. There are currently no plans to undertake further work.
The road network around the station is the responsibility of Oxfordshire Country Council, who have a statutory duty to maintain the highways network in their area.

The provision of manual boarding ramps for access and egress to a passenger train is mandatory for regulated rail vehicles where the step/gap between the train and the platform is greater than the permitted maximums. As a condition of an operator’s licence, a train company must publish a Disabled People’s Protection Policy (DPPP), which is approved by the Office of Rail and Roads.
The DPPP must demonstrate commitments to provide assistance to disabled passengers who need a ramp, booked in advance and not.

For most people, night flights include those that arrive in the very early hours of the morning. Such flights affect my constituents in Henley, particularly when planes land in an easterly wind. To what extent will the Secretary of State take their views into consideration?

I am very sensitive to issues affecting not just people who live near the immediate approaches to airports, but those who live further away, such as my hon. Friend’s constituents. That is why I believe that the better use of air space, particularly with state-of-the-art technology rather than the methods of 40 or 50 years ago, will enable us to provide much more respite for individual communities that are currently affected by aircraft noise.

The Government’s first priority is the safety and security of British citizens. The UK Government is fully focussed on enabling a return of flights Sharm el-Sheikh as soon as possible and appreciates the co-operation of the travel industry.

£100 million has been allocated to extend the Access for All programme for control period 5. Stations will be selected based on their annual footfall, weighted by the incidence of disability in the area. The preferences of the train operators and the availability of third party funding or other capital contributions will also be considered.

Network Rail has submitted Goring and Streatley as a candidate station for Access for All Funding. The Government plans to make an announcement on funding in April. In the meantime, Network Rail has
advised me that the new footbridge which will be installed in the summer will be suitable for the installation of lifts.

We have had no recent discussions with First Great Western about the cost of improving facilities at Goring and Streatley station. However, we are in dialogue with Network Rail to explore whether opportunities to install lifts to the station bridge may exist as part of the electrification programme. Failing that, we will consider the case for including Goring and Streatley in the next tranche of Access for All main schemes.

[holding answer 18 March 2013]: There is no programme for all stations on the Great Western route to have step free access. We do however take improving access at stations seriously and have therefore continued with the national Access for All programme, launched in 2006. This includes eight projects on Great Western worth around £17 million, and five of these are these are now complete. We have also announced £100 million to extend the programme until 2019 and further Great Western stations will be considered for this funding.
