To ask the Secretary of State for Trade and Industry, what research she has commissioned on the effects of the possible introduction of double summertime.
That this House recalls the experiment between 1968 and 1971 which retained British Summer Time in winter and which changed to 'double summertime' between March and October and which led to a reduction in deaths and serious injuries of about 2,500 per year; notes the present call of the Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents for a further two year trial of the earlier scheme using modern evaluation methods and data collection to provide accurate figures on its benefits in terms of reducing road accidents; and calls upon the Government to introduce such a further trial from an early date.
