Mr. Swinney: To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security what estimate she has made of the amount lost to the Government
through benefit fraud for the year 1996-97 in (a) the United Kingdom and (b) Scotland. [19233]
Mr. Denham: [holding answer 8 December 1997]: The previous Administration estimated the level of fraud at £4 billion a year. This
figure relates to Great Britain as a whole. There is no separate estimate for Scotland.
The Government is currently examining the estimate of fraud in the light of further analysis of the findings of the ongoing
programme of benefit reviews.

and Wales for making a false declaration in respect of benefit claims for 1996. [19374]
Mr. Denham: The total number of persons prosecuted in England and Wales for making a false declaration in the calendar year 1996,
amounted to 12,408. This figure includes all benefits administered by the Benefits Agency and excludes Housing Benefit which is
administered by Local Authorities.

Mr. Hinchliffe: To ask the Secretary of State for Social Security by what methods she monitors the efficiency of cross-agency
working to combat social security and child maintenance fraud. [17237]
Mr. Denham: The efficiency and effectiveness of cross-Benefits Agency/Child Support Agency working are monitored in a variety of
ways and at a number of levels. These include quarterly meetings of senior officials of both agencies, regular meetings of
operational and headquarters staff, and the recording and analysis of management information.
