That this House welcomes the production of the recent document, Spilling The Genes, in which the non-profit organisation, The Genetics Forum, questions the need, safety and benefits of genetically engineered foods; notes that along with other organisations such as SAFE, The Genetics Forum is committed to the socially responsible and democratic use of genetic engineering; notes further that Spilling the Genes warns of the potentially harmful and possibly irreversible damage to human health and the environment through reckless tampering with the genetic code, and that the food industry should not be allowed to use the general public as guinea-pigs for testing the safety of products whose risks are uncertain and whose benefits are unproven; and calls upon the Government to protect its citizens and their environment from the speculative testing and irresponsible marketing of foods which do not yet have the public's confidence.
