The Department for Transport is committed to conserving, restoring and improving biodiversity across its estate and delivering new requirements set out in the Environment Act 2021.
National Highways is increasing the number of wildlife tunnels and bridges on its network, ranging from simple wildlife tunnels and ledges to allow and encourage safe badger and otter movement, to large structures including green bridges where appropriate, which connect habitats and wildlife corridors. Green bridges are components of a number of National Highways’ new road projects.

[R] For more than two months my constituency has been gridlocked while the Conservative-led council and Network Rail have been painting a bridge. Drivers are fuming, and firms have lost between 25% and 75% of their business. Ahead of the Commonwealth games and additional works in our towns, will the Minister agree to meet me to ensure that there is no repeat of this event?

National Highways will be maintaining the pedestrian access between the Verwood Junction and West Street during construction works. The footway and the site area will be separated by fencing and boarding to ensure pedestrian safety. Any construction activities that require closure of the footway will be for short durations and, where possible, will be completed overnight and well publicised in advance.

The Department for Transport has previously invested £3 million to help create a digital road map developed by Ordnance Survey, for SatNavs, which includes information on height and weight restrictions.
In addition, the Department works with bridge owners, including Network Rail, to raise driver awareness and offer advice on avoiding low bridges. It has published a suite of documents under ‘Prevention of bridge strikes: a good practice guide’ on GOV.UK.

The Department provided £780,000 from the Highways Maintenance Challenge Fund to Cheshire West and Chester Council towards maintenance of the Winnington Swing Bridge. It is for the Council to consider and develop improvements to its highway network, including widening or replacing the single-lane bridge crossing the River Weaver at Winnington in Northwich.

We refer to the previous answer, UIN reference 62818. Following consultation in 2017, National Highways (then Highways England) commissioned a report into the loading effect on bridges of permitting volumetric concrete mixers (VCMs) to operate at higher than the standard applicable weights for vehicles of their design, including 38.4 tonnes.

The Government and National Highways takes its responsibility to support vulnerable people on the road network extremely seriously.
National Highways has also worked in partnership with Samaritans to develop specific guidance for placing crisis signs on the Strategic Road Network and Road Investment Strategy includes dedicated funding through to 2025 for its regional teams to place signs when a need is identified.
Local authorities already have powers to provide suicide prevention signs. It is for them to work with relevant charities, public health bodies, and other stakeholder groups to consider whether such signing would be beneficial and in what locations.
