The government is committed to the principle that all police use of force must be reasonable, proportionate and necessary and this is set in law.
We recognise the crucial work of the Council of Europe and in particular the Parliamentary Assembly in this sphere, noting that recommendations will go to the Committee of Ministers in due course for appropriate review.

Our police forces have played a critical role during the pandemic and have been quick to respond to the changes and challenges that we all face. The Government have been clear that they will provide police forces with the support, both moral and physical, that they need to continue protecting the public and keeping communities safe through the coronavirus pandemic. Building Regulations guidance in Approved Document M states that a passenger lift is the most suitable form of access for people moving from one story to another. Government is expecting to receive advice from the Building Regulations Advisory Committee on the scope of a review of this guidance in Approved Document M.
