Dr. Iddon: To ask the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport what steps he is taking to promote swimming lessons.

Kate Hoey: Swimming and water safety are an important part of the National Curriculum for Physical Education. Swimming remained
compulsory when the non-core subjects were temporarily suspended to allow for the establishment of the national literacy and
numeracy strategies. The Government want to ensure that, by Key Stage 2, children are able to swim unaided for 25 m. We are aware
that, currently some children are not meeting this standard.

Mr. Nigel Jones: To ask the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport if he will make a statement on his plans to improve
swimming facilities and coaching for the 2004 Olympic Games. [139282]
Kate Hoey: UK Sport is currently undertaking a review of long term performance funding for individual sports following the Sydney
Olympics. As part of the review and post-Sydney analysis, UK Sport will be considering a four year funding programme for swimming,
with Lottery awards agreed in February 2001.
In addition, I have met with the Performance Directors of all the Olympic Sports, including swimming, to discuss ways of building on
the success of Sydney and to see what lessons can be learned as preparations are made for Athens.

Mr. Hoyle: To ask the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport what assistance his Department provides to Olympic swimmers.

Kate Hoey: From 1 October 1999 to January 2000 the Amateur Swimming Association of Great Britain was awarded £396,029 towards the
Programme costs for these swimmers which includes training at home and abroad, access to equipment and facilities, and coaching. In
addition to this the swimmers themselves were awarded approximately £224,876 in subsistence support. This support will continue, the
next funding period will run from 1 February 2000 to 30 September 2000, with the precise details to be agreed shortly. The final
squad selection for the Sydney Olympics will be made on 30 July 2000. Currently 47 elite swimmers are supported by UK Sport and
Sport England under the Lottery funded World Class Performance Programme.

In addition to the listed funds made available by UK Sport and Sport England, my Department also provides funding to the Sportsmatch
scheme. This scheme encourages commercial sponsors to invest in grass root sport, particularly youth development programmes. During
