Lord James Douglas-Hamilton: Information in the level of detail requested is not collected centrally. Table A shows available
information on the number of homes and hospitals registered under the Nursing Homes Registration (Scotland) Act 1938, as amended, or
the Mental Health Acts 1960 to 1984, the total number of beds, and the category of services provided for each year since 1987. Table
B provides details of the number of patients resident in these establishments by category as at 31 March in each year since 1994.

discussions about financing projects through the private finance initiative.[32446]
Lord James Douglas-Hamilton: NHS trusts and health boards in Scotland must consider options for the use of private finance for all
capital schemes.
The PFI is being actively explored in the sense that proposals from the private sector have been invited under open competition for
the projects set out. These schemes are all listed in the recently published document "Public Services and Private Finance: A
Partnership for Scotland"--The Scottish Office, June 1996--which is available in the Library of the House.

Lord James Douglas-Hamilton: The recently published document "Public Services and Private Finance: A Partnership for Scotland"--the
Scottish Office, June 1996--available in the House of Commons Library lists schemes for which contracts have been signed. Each of
these involves the provision of certain services, capital investment by the private sector and risk transfer to that sector, in line
with the private finance initiative. The schemes listed are:

Mrs. Roche: To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland how much was paid late to the private sector for goods and services by his
Department in 1995-96.[26148]
Lord James Douglas-Hamilton: The information on the percentage of bills paid late is currently in the process of being collected and
collated for publication by the Department of Trade and Industry. The form in which statistical information is collected within The
Scottish Office for this purpose does not allow an accurate assessment of the annual value of late payment, and such a figure could
be provided only at disproportionate cost.
