To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland what recent discussions he has had with the First Minister on membership of the EU; and if he will make a statement.

No discussions have been held with the First Minister on membership of the EU. The UK Government has set out its view that the most likely scenario would be that an independent Scotland would have to join the EU as a new state, requiring negotiation with other member states including the terms of membership.
