Mr. Webb: To ask the Chancellor of the Exchequer if he will list the excess winter deaths for each English region and for Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland in each year from 1996-97 to 2001-02, broken down by (a) age and (b) sex for each year. Letter to Mr. Steve Webb from Mr. Len Cook dated 22 October 2002 As National Statistician I have been asked to reply to your recent question asking for the excess winter deaths for each English region, Wales and Scotland, in each year 1996-1997 to 2001-2002, broken down by a) age and b) sex for each year. (76180) Figures for English Government Office Regions and for Wales for 1996-97 to 2000-01 are provided in the attached table. Comparable figures for Scotland and Northern Ireland are not produced routinely. Available figures for Scotland were published in a GRO Scotland occasional paper in April 2002.1 Final figures for 2000-2001 and provisional excess winter mortality figures for 2001-2002 will be released on 24 October 2002.
