Question
To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions, what changes he anticipates in the defects indices for each category of road when the National Road Maintenance Condition Survey is next published. - (Holding answer 2 November 1999).
Answer

Mr. Jenkin: To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions what changes he anticipates in the defects indices for each category of road when the National Road Maintenance Condition Survey is next published. [97069] Mr. Hill: [holding answer 2 November 1999]: It would be unwise to make an estimate from a single year. However, in view of the increases in maintenance funding that the Government have provided, I would expect that over the next few years the deteriorating trend in the published indices will start to be reversed.
