Question: To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions, how many staff were employed by his Department; and what percentage of them were eligible to claim a car mileage allowance on 31st March in each year since 1990.

Answer: Mr. Stunell: To ask the Secretary of State for the Environment, Transport and the Regions how many staff were employed by his Department; and what percentage of them were eligible to claim a care mileage allowance on 31 March in each year since 1990. [25792] Angela Eagle: The Department of the Environment, Transport and the Regions came into existence on 16 June 1997. Figures for the numbers of staff employed by the former Departments since 1990 are not available, although a breakdown for each year covering the then structures of the former departments was set out in the Departmental Reports, which are available in the Library. All staff may claim car mileage allowance if they are required to travel on official business and otherwise meet the criteria.
