To ask the Secretary of State for Wales, how much money (a) the Welsh Office (b) Tai Cymru and (c) local authorities invested in improving housing stock in Wales in (i) 1996, (ii) 1997 and (iii) 1998; and what is the projected figure for 1999. - Inc figs.

Mr. Wigley: To ask the Secretary of State for Wales how much money (a) the Welsh Office (b) Tai Cymru and (c) local authorities invested in improving housing stock in Wales in (i) 1996, (ii) 1997 and (iii) 1998; and what is the projected figure for 1999. [60659] Mr. Jon Owen Jones: The available information is set out below. Total Welsh Office allocations for housing capital expenditure to Tai Cymru and unitary authorities for new build and improvements: 1996-97 £343 million; 1997-98 £274 million; 1998-99 £277 million. Housing capital expenditure by unitary authorities: 1996-97 £266 million; 1997-98 £236 million (provisional); 1998-99 £226 million (provisional). Tai Cymru gross capital expenditure: 1996-97 £99 million; 1997-98 £71 million; 1998-99 £71 million (provisional). My right hon. Friend is currently consulting on spending plans for Welsh Office programmes for the next three financial years. He will announce his decisions later in the year.
