Dr. Strang: To ask the Secretary of State for Scotland how many commissions his Department placed with the Agriculture and Food Research Council and the Biotechnology and Biological Science Research Council in each year since 1979; how many such commissions he expects to place in 1997; and what the value was of the commissions in (a) cash and (b) constant prices. [19367] Mr. Raymond S. Robertson: The number and value of Scottish Office-funded research contracts placed with the Agriculture and Food Research Council and the Biotechnology and Biological Sciences Research Council institutes in each year since 1991-92 are set out in the following table. Contracts to be let in 1997 have yet to be advertised, and it is therefore not yet known which contractors will be successful. Data in respect of the financial years before 1991-92 are not held centrally.
