Question: What new traffic rules will accompany the designation of a road as an expressway; and to what extent (a) cyclists, (b) pedestrians and (c) other classes of road users will be prohibited from using these roads.

Answer: Mr. Allen: To ask the Secretary of State for Transport what new traffic rules will accompany the designation of a road as an expressway; and to what extent (a) cyclists, (b) pedestrians and (c) other classes of road user will be prohibited from using these roads.[36579] Mr. Norris: I see the designation of expressways primarily as a way of drawing to the attention of road users and business the existence of high-quality roads of near-motorway standard. Restrictions on particular categories of road user are not part of my Department's plans for expressways.
