Health: Overseas Workers

Question: To ask Her Majesty’s Government what specific plans they have to support the implementation of the Code of Practice on the International Recruitment of Health Personnel, following its endorsement by the WHO World Health Assembly in May 2010.

Answer: The UK Government actively supported the adoption of the World Health Organisation's voluntary Code of Practice. We are encouraged that our work leading up to the UN high-level plenary meeting on the millennium development goals secured further recognition of the Code of Practice in the outcome document. The document highlights the importance of national and international actions to increase the retention of skilled health personnel in developing countries. We are continuing the collaboration between the Department for International Development and the Department of Health on the implementation of the principles and recommendations in the Code of Practice for the recruitment of international health personnel, which cover both the future UK reporting to the WHO and our international activities with partner countries.
